The First Genre: Political Cartoon (Rationale)

Rhetorical Situation: The usage of chemical herbicides throughout Vietnam by United States forces has had a significant impact on Vietnamese society. It has resulted in newborn deformities, agricultural devastation, and thousands of deaths. There is, therefore, a need for it to be addressed and analyzed.

Genre: I believe a political Cartoon is essential because it delivers a clear image of the effects and deviations of chemical warfare.

Audience: My political cartoon is intended to appeal to people with a negative view of U.S. intervention and tactics on obstacles occurring overseas. The audience can be American citizens who believe that U.S. intervention in foreign affairs does more harm than good. It can also be political leaders that aspire to create a better future by learning from past grievances. The audience can also be a scientist studying the effects of chemical warfare on society as a whole.

Purpose: My political cartoon was created to show an illustration of how the United States forces utilized thousands of gallons of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. The figure shows the impacts the herbicide has had a tremendous impact on Vietnamese society that will unforgotten for centuries to come. The cartoon will serve as a message to the United States that ultimate weapons of defense are more destructive than defense worthy.

The Second Genre: Photograph With Caption (Rationale)

Rhetorical Situation: Chemical warfare by American forces are primarily hidden to the American public, explicitly utilizing chemical weapons on other nations. Vietnam has experienced some of the worst aspects of chemical weapons; therefore, there is a need to address the government’s role in the usage of herbicides.

Genre: I believe a Photograph followed by a caption is imperative because it displays an actual depiction of US forces intervention in the Vietnam War and the administration that allowed it.

Audience: The photographs are intended for Americans who believe that the American government failed to respond rationally to the Vietnam War and contributed to more devastation than assistance. The audience is also designed for Americans who disapproved of Lyndon B. Johnson and his notions on foreign policy. The audience can also be pacifists who believe that war and violence is never the answer to resolving a conflict.

Purpose: The purpose of these photographs is to provide multiple interpretations of the different weapons that the American Government has utilized in past war. The photographs can also make viewers wonder whether or not President Johnson’s administration will be the last of hazardous chemicals used to resolve conflict, ultimately affecting an abundance of lives innocent or not. The photographs are also intended to display what war means for superpower nation that have lethal weapons and what that means for struggling third world countries.
